A Chinoiserie Two-Tier Low Table

A Two-Tier table in the Japonisme taste, attributed to Gabriel Viardot (1839-1904).

Paris, End of XIX Century.

67 × 40 × 80 (h)

A Chinoiserie low table in hardwood, the rectangular top with raised corners framing a central panel of polychrome breccia marble in reds, creams and greys. The structure is set with two lower tiers, the openwork side panels carved with archaic chi-dragon scrollwork, the turned columns and the lion paw feet retaining their original carved detail. The lacquered surface carries the gentle wear of age, the marble showing its typical breccia patterning within the raised hardwood border. A piece in the Anglo-Chinese taste of the late XIX and early XX century, equally useful as a tea table, a side table or a centre table in a salon of eclectic taste.
