A Single-Light Carved and Gilded Wood Candelabrum

A Single-Light Carved and Gilded Wood Candelabrum

H cm 140

A single-light candelabrum carved in wood and finished in aged water gilding, of richly Baroque silhouette. The flaring, foliate capital rises from a baluster stem articulated by two boldly carved knops: an upper lobed bobbin and a lower swelling node wrapped in flame-like acanthus, all descending into a tripod base whose volutes uncurl into leafy scrolls. The pale sage-green tole drip pan, fitted with a brass double-knob candle socket, holds a slender ivory taper. Across the surface the gilding has mellowed into a soft, variegated gold, with rubbed areas revealing the chalky preparation beneath, in a patina that quietly testifies to long use. The elaborate carving and taut symmetry place the piece in the taste of the nineteenth century, recalling earlier Baroque and Rococo models of the kind once made for devotional and domestic interiors
